Jete Nahi Dibo poems and translation

Jete Nahi Dibo
Farsi, Kashmiri, Bin
gali

Lyrics: Laal Daad, Nima Youshij, Rabindranath Tagore, Rumi

Kashmiri poem ( Laal Daad)

āmi panɨ sədras nāvi čhes lamān

kati bōzi day myōn me ti diyi tār

āmyan t̩ākyan pōyn zan šamān

zuv čhum bramān garɨ gat͡shaha

With a delicate (untwisted) thread I pull my boat upon the sea

When will my lord listen and take me across!

Like cups/goblets made of unbaked clay wasted by water

My soul is wandering (in delusion), I want to go home!

Inside my heart, within and without, the beloved is everywhere
Inside my body, my soul and my veins, it’s just the beloved
There is no room for Kufr (rejection of faith) or Imaan (faith) anymore

Bengali poem (Rabindranath Tagore)

– Jete nahi dibo, jete nahi dibo

-Trino khudroti tareo badhiya bokkhey maata boshumoti

-Kohičhen pranoprone, “jete nahi dibo”

I won’t let you go, I won’t let you go
It’s the oldest cry resounding from earth to heaven

The solemnest lament, “I won’t let you go!”

-Giyeče ashshin. pujaar čhuir sheshe

-Phire jete hobe aaji bohu duur deshe

-Shei kormoshtane. bhrittogon byashto hoye

-Baandhiče jinish potro doraadori loye

-Haankahaanki d̩aakad̩aaki a ghore, o ghore.

-Ghorer grihini, čokhkhu čhol-čhol kore,

-Byathiche bokhkher kačhe pashaaner bhaar

-Tobu shomaye tar nahi kaandibaar

Autumn is over, festivities are done

a return to a faraway land beckons

to the workplace, amidst the humdrum of

servants tying packages, buyers hagglings, sellers negotiating

the cacophony of it all

yet, the woman of the house, with teary eyes

fostering a burden of pain in her heart

has no time to cry

-“Jete nahi dibo, jete nahi dibo”

-Shobey kohey, “jete nahi dibo”

“Won’t let you go! Won’t let you go!”

Everything cries, “I won’t let you go!”

This city has been asleep for long
The city that fosters silence
The city that has been vanquished

Towards the silent city, the bell rings softly
But the attempt is in vain for the city gates are closed

I have no connection with my spirit, my body is motionless, like a dead body,

Nothing is inside it and nothing comes out of it, not even the breath that sings

Towards the silent city, the bell rings softly
But the attempt is in vain for the city gates are closed

Towards the silent city, the bell rings softly
But the attempt is in vain for the city gates are closed

The city is awake, the city is aware

She winks and now her eyelashes move

It (the city) comes back to life and it dreams

A portion of it (its body) is still frozen with those heavy nights
And piercing through the horizon, the wall of the dawn rises
